Till now I flashed my Samsung Wave two times which is actually working pretty good.

You should start the Platformdownloader before you connect your phone via USB to your computer. The downloader recognizes the phone after a few seconds and tells you which ports are ready. You must have installed the USB-Drivers on your PC before. You don't have to disable the MTP-Screen, but you can. The MTP-Screen "locks" the screen and displays that your phone is connected, in this case you cannot work with your phone while it is connected to the computer. To disable the MTP-Sceen, you have to dial *#6870# on your phone.

When you're connected with the downloader, your phone should display a mobile phone icon and an arrow pointing on the icon from the top. Now you're ready to go. Click the "Download" Button and pray ... sometimes the Downloader displays a security warning and you can't go on. If so, you have to reconnect your phone. Sometimes this takes more then one try. If you don't get the warning, the downloader starts with flashing your phone. This takes around 3-5 Minutes. The phone will reboot automatically and you're done.

To see the new version number, simply type *#1234# on you phone.

I'm currently running version S8500XXJE4, the CSC-Version is S8500OXAJE4.

The game 'asphalt5' is preinstalled with this version as it was 2 versions before. I now get a little bit more far when trying to connect to my Exchange Server, but I can't sync. I always get a "Connection error" message which is unfortunately not telling me the exact problem. Could be wrong password, could be wrong server URL, I don't know. I double checked all options and couldn't find any typos or wrong settings. Does anybody know if this is just not implemented yet?

Also, I'm still not able to connect to my full Google account. Only Google mail is working, but the full account with contact and calendar sync is not available. Twitter and Facebook work as expected.

As I had some more time yesterday to play around with the Wave I started downloading some HQTEST-Apps from the market. Some are really funny like the "Word World e-book" telling a story about a bug that can't sleep and a frog helping the bug finding a good place to sleep. Looks like some developers are a little bit bored . However, with a 3G connection, the phone is really fun. Twitter, Facebook, App-Download, it's really working great. I also like the downloading animation on the phone, showing the app icon with less brightness and then "filling" the icon with "water" until it has it's full contrast.

I also have to mention the speakers of the phone. The quality of the speakers is really great. I use it all the time when I drive in my car. The sound/voice is clear and loud enough and nothing seems to vibrate or jam the sound.

Now, the feature I like most Video phone call: The current version now does fully work. The versions before had the problem, that the called person had no chance to do anything on the phone when he/she received the phone call except for hanging up. Now, if I'm the one who receives the call, I can enable my video camera and the display is working while I'm on the phone .. great, I really love this feature.

To sum it up: A lot of essential things like synchronizing multiple accounts with mail, contacts and calendar are still not working. The video call bug was fixed, and the phone is still fun.

Hello Norbert,

i’m following your reviews with great attention and i’d like to ask you some questions about the WAVE in its current state, since Eldar Murtazin stopped answering questions after he suggested it in the first place on his blog, but anyways:

What can you tell us about the obvious limitations of the WAVE, i.e.:

1. How many native Apps can run simultaneously till the phone runs out of resources ?

2. How many bada-Apps can run simultaneously? Is it even possible?

3. How about Dolphin 2.0 – is it able to handle Flash, like animations, videos etc.?

4. How many SMS, Appointments, Memos, Tasks can be saved? Or is it dynamically handled like the phone book?

5. Did you try synchronizing with KIES ? How does the WAVE respond?
Is it possible to sync Groups and Call-IDs, save from and restore SMS back to the phone?

6. Is it possible to record conversations?

7. Is it true that the Voice-Recognition App was removed?

Thats it for now. Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer these questions, much appreciated.

Hi there, wow, a lot of questions :)
I haven’t tried everything you’re asking for, but that kind of gives me some more tasks to test with the wave.

1) and 2)
Unfortunately It is not possible to run apps simultaneously. There is a difference between a “bada app” and a “base app”. base apps are apps like phone, phonebook, contacts, calendar etc. actually those where a developer can hook into with his own app, but not extend the base functionality. However, there are background services running on a bada device where a developer is able to register events which then call the app if any of those events fire (e.g. incoming SMS, email etc.)
3) Flash is supported, in the browser as well as there is a special flash-control for developers to use for own apps. We are about to develop a game app which we’d like to work with flash. I can give you more details on that when we’re on the way with it.
4) As far as I can see it, it’s handled dynamically, but I’m not sure on that.
5) Haven’t tried yet, but I’ll take that as a task.
6) Just checked that and I’m positively surprised that this is possible.
7) I didn’t know anything about a voice-recognition app and I can’t anything about it on the phone or in developer board at the moment. A Text To Speech API is a planned feature though.

I hope the answers can help you,
Regards
Norbert

Hello Norbert,

thanks for your reply.

As for the voice recognition app please take a look at this video (starting at 0:40) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zygclc63mNg

Seems like they dropped it because of stability reasons, but as long as the API supports it, maybe feature apps will provide such functions.

After your experiences you collected until now with the WAVE, what are the major drop-backs or negative aspects in your opinion ?

Thanks again and looking forward to your reply.

Hello,
I’m still unsure as to how the multitasking will work. So i’ll put my actual usage upfront. What I do is have Fring open all day and everyday and sometimes I use the camera for pics vids and then I would open qik to make vids or then i’d click a link sent to me via fring which would open a browser on which id have multiple pages open. It’d be great if I was to be able to get some downtime by playing a game too. Would this be possible? I dont think it is is it. Also I don’t know all the apps which are ‘base apps’.
I do all this with my HTC Diamond(except qik) and if im unable to do all this i’m going ot have to go with the Galaxy S instead unfortunately.

@Sid:
It’s not that easy to compare the bada architecture with the android architecture I think. The problem that one as a developer has is, that you can’t just send an event to the system and some other applications pics it up (e.g. the barcode scanner on android). Still, there is a lot that the API gives you to use all that functionality in your own application like camera or phone book. I actually don’t know if I can click a link in an application that will open the browser but I also think that this might be a problem with this architecture. I don’t know how fring works but from what I read about it (in the last 2 minutes) it probably needs a background service to work and react on incoming data. In bada that’s not possible. There might be different ways for a work around to do so, but I’d need more information about the architecture then. Maybe the Galaxy S is the better phone for you (I had it for two days at droidcon in Berlin last week, it’s an awesome phone)

@Craig:
As you might have seen already, I tested my Wave with Kies and had no difficulties in connecting it to my PC. Have you set the USB connection to “Samsung Kies”? What Version are you running? (to find the Version, type *#1234# on the dial-pad)
I have a special non-public partner version running so there might be differences between them.

Iv checked that it is set to “Samsung Kies” in the USB connection yes. I am using version

sw version
S8500XXJEE

csc version
S8500XEUJEC

What happens is that my computer begins to install the MPT device and once it has installed it, it begins to install it again and jst does this over and over. At the same time “Samsung Kies” just continues to search for the device without finding anything. I am also using the newest version of “Samsung Kies”. Really not sure what else to try!

Well, it seems that the program Kies has not been build for an 64 bit windows :(
Let’s hope this will be fixed soon

joins to craig. the same to to me. kies just doesnt work with win7. btw, the phone seems really good. it is stable which is was the most important feature for me, battery time is really nice also, not to mention the camera quality and the Super AMOLED display, which is superb, really. However I am not totally happy because the only way to use the phone as a modem (which is working), is the mobile AP (wi-fi). To be honest, I expected (and fear from) this. The only phones which worked for me well in this field were all win mobile 6.x devices. (internet sharing) (with windows and ubuntu)

OK, it is working. I didn’t have another internet access I used the PC only with the S8500. When I put the PC on a normal wi-fi access and connected the s8500 in Kies mode the Win7 downloaded the required drivers and WHOA everything just worked after. but that 150MB Kies connectivity software is a pain, I’d e happier something simpler connectivity solution <10MB

@Shergar: have you checked that all running programs are closed? Press the middle button for some seconds and at the upcoming screen you can select “close all applications” (or similiar). Close the apps and after i did that i was able to connect.

I just encountered this problem once I enabled security passwords….previously no problem, enabled various passwords and all of a sudden Keis can’t talk to the phone anymore, resulting in lots of obscure symptoms, driver reloads, hang-ups, App running extraordinarily slowly and hanging up my PC….
Removed main password and all now good, although Keis did ask for the next level password, which I’d left in – it does have an auto remember feature for this password. – Obvious really, but who’d'a thought ;)
Cheers,
Dave.

to connect the phone to kies
Close kies
Press and hold menu button on the phone – select end all applications
Select smasung kies under settings-connectivity-USB-samsung kies
Connect to computer with USB cable(have a windows 7 64 bit OS)
Windows will automatically install MTP driver and opens up its own window to manipulate the contents of the phone.
Now start kies, and it will recognize the phone and allow all its function on the phone

@Nitin Mehta:
Check http://www.samsungmobile.com for boards that are in your language and check if they have a Wave-Thread already (the probably do)
If you understand German language, you can check this link here http://forum.samsungmobile.de/samsung-s8500-wave.html

I had just bought this new wave and I’m really amazed with it’s features but it has a back log and trying to figure out what’s wrong with it. When I need to access the internet through my phone an error pops saying “Internal server error”, so I will switch off the phone and turn it on, with that I can connect and disconnect with the internet. The problem was if after sometime your not connected to the internet and decided to access the internet the error message prompts again, so you need to repeat the annoying process of turning the cellphone “on” and “off” all over again just to have an internet connection. It would be highly appreciated if you could help me on this annoying circumstances
